As Fall has started, so has multiplication! Third Graders are responsible for learning their multiplication tables up to 100. In order to asses their fluency with multiplication and division I do "conferences". Instead of giving every student a sheet of facts and a minute to write down the product, I have the students come up to me and look at a sheet of paper. If they tell my the product within three second, that fact is considered automatic. If they use a strategy, that's great! But we will keep working on them until they are automatic. The order of the facts for conferences goes 10s, 2s, 5s, 3s, 4s, 6s, 7s, 8s, 9s. You will be getting more information on how this whole process works next week. Look for the first conference sheet to go home on Thursday!
We are wrapping up our communities unit in social studies. The students will be writing letters to different types of communities across the United States (all fifty states!). We usually get only ten or so letters back, but it is so exciting when we do! We look up their school on Google Earth and discuss what kind of community wrote back to us. I can't believe it's already almost October. Our first month has flown by! A Look Ahead: Monday - Picture day at 11:45am Thursday - School drill

September is almost gone already! This was our first week with spelling words. We take our test on Friday and I correct and grade them over the weekend. Be on the lookout for their spelling tests on Monday. We also started social studies this week. Your students are learning the different types of communities (rural, suburban, and urban) and what is found in them. Soon we will add letter writing to a community project!
We had our first birthday of the year. When your child comes in on their birthday we have a few things to make their day special. They get several items of birthday sway (pencils, stickers, and bookmarks) and the class creates a birthday book. Each student will create a page made especially for the birthday student. They are so creative! I am placing the scholastic book order tonight if there are any last minute orders! Also, our PTA magazine drive has started. Be on the lookout for the little book for your students to fill in if your family chooses to participate. A look ahead: September 23rd - Little Books Due (Magazine Drive) September 30th - Picture Day We survived our first full week of school! The students were busy this week! They jumped into our regular routine with both feet. We started our math lessons which included homework. Remember, if your student is getting frustrated with their math homework please send it in with a note. There are no consequences for needing a little extra help!
We also started our reading program. This ended with a practice quiz that we completed together today. Our benchmarks were done on the computer this week and are all finished up. These benchmark tests help me make small groups for reading and give me a general idea for math strengths. Next week we will be starting spelling. Your student will come home with a pre-test on Monday night. Please study those words over the week to prepare for their first spelling test on Friday. We will also start using our assignment books. Look in their assignment books to see what is due each day. There will be a stamp each day to show that a teacher checked their assignment book. Important Dates: October 18th - Michaelmas November 22nd - Native American Museum field trip May 28th - Giant Whale in school field trip June 5th - Whale Watch Our first week as a third grade class has come to an end! Mitchell Updates will be a weekly sneak peak at what your student has been up to. I also try to give a reminder for important upcoming events!
Our first week was filled with lots of information! The students learned about their classroom by completing a scavenger hunt and learned about each other by playing a board game. We were even able to get almost everyone on the computers to play math games today! One of the most popular spots in the classroom is our classroom library. We have lots of books to excited hopefully every reader in the classroom. Next week, on Monday, your student will start their math lesson which means they will start getting homework. Over the weekend they are tasked with finding a spot they will be able to focus for homework. I will stock their binders with items that will ensure they can do homework anywhere. Some of the tools include pencils, spelling sheets, a number grid, and other items. I will hopefully see many of you next week for back to school night! This is for me to give information to parents about our school year. I will have lots of dates for you, such as the Whale Watch and Michaelmas, so bring a sticky note! Have a lovely weekend. Kristen Upcoming Dates: Back to School Night - Tuesday, September 10th @ 6:00 Magazine Drive - Thursday, September 19th |
