We had an exciting visitor! Ms. Welch, who will be Mrs. Mitchell's long-term substitute once Mini Mitchell arrives, came to visit our classroom on Thursday. She jumped right in and will be such a wonderful addition to our classroom family as we finish out the year. Ms. Welch just recently moved to the area from New York and has been in the building subbing. She's taught first and fourth grade and we are so lucky to have her!
We finished up our Opinion writing unit. You may have received some demanding letters for things like tree houses and cell phones! The students were very excited about their writing, and although they may not be perfect, they are getting better at creating paragraphs, staying on topic, and using voice. These are all things that we will continue with in third grade! We also finished up another math unit. The students are gaining so many strategies to solve larger addition and subtraction problems.
With writing done, that means we will be starting science! Be on the lookout for emails requesting help and simple supplies you may have at home. We will be working on states of matter!
A Look Ahead
Monday - Mrs. Mitchell is out (not for a baby!!) and Ms. Welch will be running the classroom :)
Tuesday - Ms. Welch visits with us again
Saturday - April VaCaTiOn!!
The first week of April has come and gone! Although the weather is getting somewhat warmer outside, please have your child dress in layers (tshirt and sweater). It is already getting quite warm in our classroom and having short sleeves would be helpful. Having lots of water to drink will also help as the weather gets warmer. However, having a light coat or a warm sweater to go outside would keep them warm as they work out their energy. Thanks!
We've been finishing up our last big writing project this week. The students have been writing letters trying to convince the adults in their lives to do certain things. You may be getting letters trying to convince you of cell phones or sea turtle pets soon! The students have become more and more comfortable with technology and are in a great spot to head to third grade. We are also finishing up our unit in math. We've learned a lot of different strategies to adding and subtract larger numbers. As long as your student has one strategy that works for them, they are allowed to use that during any assessment or world problem. We will build on these strategies and eventually go to the shorter versions you were probably taught in school.
Before vacation gets here, we are going to start another science unit. Be on the lookout for emails asking for help with materials and classroom helpers! Also, today a paper went home to order classroom t-shirts! These will be used during field day, our field trip, and our performance after vacation. Please return the paper as soon as possible so our shirts will be in on time.
Have a great weekend!
