The Curious Koalas are finishing out October with lots of hard work! We are almost done our first writing project and will be reading our Personal Narratives to the class this coming week. After hearing their peers work, they will write one more personal narrative using all of the knowledge they learned from meeting with adults to show what they know without any help! Thank you again to the lovely volunteers who came in to help with story ideas, spelling, and general writing support! The students enjoyed reading to you!
We also stretched our brains and practiced the Unit Assessment for reading together as a class. We went through lots of gum and mints to help us focus and do our best thinking!
A Look Ahead:
Monday - Field Trip is postponed to 11/5
Wednesday - Halloween Parade (costumes on after lunch [12:05], a short game [12:30], parade [1:00], yummy treats [1:25], and one more game if we have time [1:45])
May 2019 - Mitchell family will grow by one <3 Mrs. Mitchell is expecting a new baby, we celebrated the exciting news with mini cupcakes on Thursday!
Another busy week for the Curious Koalas! We built lots of cooperative cardboard structures in the library on Monday. There was everything from a house, to creatures, to a ball game with tubing inside. It was great to see their creativity shine!
We've been working on helper facts in math and continue to practice our addition facts in school. Some students have already made it to their +3 facts! We used the computers to practice our math skills and are working on logging into them independently.
Our narrative stories are making great process. A few students are starting to write their final draft. Thanks to three separate parents that came to join us during writing time this week we should finish our projects this coming week!
A Look Ahead:
Wednesday: Fire preventioin @ 12:15 (dress warm!)
Picture retake day in the gym
Monday: Walking field trip down town
Wednesday: Halloween Parade at 1:00
Another busy week for the Curious Koalas! We have been looking at helper facts and different ways to find answers to addition problems we aren't fluent with yet. We started doing math conferences to figure out which addition facts we are fluent with. Some students are already on their +2s! We started logging into the computers for the first time and began playing math games to practice our addition and money skills.
We began a writing project and are writing a personal narrative about a small event that happened in our lives. We've slowly started to decorate for Halloween and made some scarecrows to decorate our bulletin board. We've got some other great crafts planned as we edge closer to Halloween!
A Look Ahead
Have a great weekend!!
This week we had a lot of first. We started homework! For the remainder of the year, there will be a math homework sheet in their mailbox Monday through Thursday. I always give the students Friday off so everyone can enjoy their weekend! If they forget their homework, starting next week they will be able to bring it in the next day. If they forget it two days in a row, they will use an extra copy to complete during snack time. We also make a very important decision... what our classroom name would be! We are officially the Curious Koalas!
A Look Ahead
We will be starting to work on our addition and subtraction fact flunecy next week. The students will meet with me twice a week to orally tell me the answers to the problems they are focusing on. They will all start with their +1 facts (0-10). If they are able to master (know their answer without a strategy within a few seconds) every fact twice in a row, they will move on to the next fact. I will send home flashcards to help your student practice at home.
Also, we talked about a club called Destination Imagination here after school. Many of the students seemed interested. It is an after school club that competes in different types of creative problem solving activities. For more information on the types of challenges and competitions click here. They will also be getting paperwork in their mailbox if they said they were interested in learning more about the club.
We will also be starting our first writing project. Next week I will be reaching out to some of the writing volunteers to help me read stories and give feedback to the students. So if you checked off the writing box, be on the lookout for an email from me.
Have a great weekend! See you on Monday (we have school).
