It was a busy week for us this week. We wrapped up our first unit in Math. Next month we will start to talk about how I do fact practice for students. Students are expected to be fluent with their multiplication facts before the end of the year in third grade. The sooner they have "fact power" the easier our math curriculum will become for them. Don't worry - I will walk you through expectations and ways to practice. More coming soon! We also finished our letters for all fifty states. The students were super flexible using Word for the first time this year. They accessed their network folders and even learned to print to a specific printer in the building. You may see creative stories coming home. The students know they have to have permission from me in order to print these stories. We talked about using resources wisely. There is a difference between creating a story and printing it and writing one silly sentence and printing it. I am beyond impressed with their technology skills, from Blooket to Word, these kids have a lot of background knowledge! That's it for now! Have a great extended weekend! Upcoming Events: 📅 Friday, October 15th - Michaelmas! (2 weeks away) A Look Ahead: ⚖️ In math, we are going to start Unit 2 and looking closely at estimating and adding without a number grid 💡 In reading, we are going to look at some famous American Landmarks - have you traveled anywhere important in our country? 🌇 In social studies, we are mailing our letters and starting a science unit!

I cannot thank the families of New Boston enough! $20,000+ for our school raised through the Boosterthon. It was such a blast completing our Fun Glow Run today. Let me tell you, your children sure know how to run! They ran anywhere from 45 to 100+ laps during our 30 minutes in the gym. We had some nice discussions about some great qualities like humility and practice. So, again, thank you for the support!
We have been working hard learning the different types of communities. The fan favorite for studying communities was using Blooket! They were very willing guinea pigs for a new review website. You may have heard of defending towers or dance parties - but I promise there was lots of learning going on as well! We will wrap up this topic next week with a virtual field trip (hopefully!) and a quick quiz. What's next? Perhaps... some science? In reading, we did our first "cold-read" practice test. We worked on strategies to tackle tests. Reading questions beforehand and crossing out answers you know aren't correct are a good start. We also wrapped up our AimsWeb testing! They worked so hard and earned every piece of gum it took to get them through it. That information is so helpful for me to make groups and support your students. Upcoming Events: 📅 Friday, October 1st - NO SCHOOL: Teacher Workshop Day A Look Ahead: ⚖️ In math, we are going to introduce weight and take our Unit 1 Assessment 💡 In reading, we're going to hear about some interesting inventions! 🌇 In social studies, we are going to finish up communities We completed our first FULL week of school! It was filled to the brim with new activities. Our biggest activity is our new fundraiser! We got to meet Lay-up Liam and Jump Shot James. They created a flag for us and talked about two important skills for all athletes: Curiosity and Practice! I'm so looking forward to next week when we get to top our fundraiser off with a fun run! The PTA has created an amazing FAQ section if you have questions about the program. So feel free to reach out at [email protected] if you have any questions!
Michaelmas it inching closer! We are FOUR weeks from faire day! I will start sending out emails of suggestions for good places to be in the Michaelmas process next week. The week leading up to Michaelmas we practice things like supply/demand and making change. However, most of the work is done at home. If you have any questions or just want to run an idea by me - please don't hesitate to reach out. You have some of the most flexible third graders I have ever met! We started using laptops this week, of course attempting math games first. As with anything new, there were a few bumps. But everyone took deep breaths (even the teacher) and we got through it. We also started AIMsWeb testing on the laptops. Again, such flexible learners. There were some tough math questions on that test! Probably the most exciting first this year (perhaps I should have lead with this one) we started reading buddies! Your third graders are the proud big buddies to a very excited (and wiggly) AM Kindergarten class. Each Friday we will meet with our buddies to play games, do activities, and of course - read! They were so patient and kind with our new little friends. These friendships often last until they graduate NBCS and beyond. I am so excited to be able to bring this program back, even if we have to go outside in order to make it safer. Well - that's enough for now! A big week is coming up, so enjoy the weekend! Upcoming Events: 📷 Monday, September 20th - Picture Day 🍎 Tuesday, September 21st - Back to School Night @ 6pm 🏃 Friday, September 24th - Boosterthon Fun Run @ 1pm (families welcome to cheer from sidelines!) A Look Ahead: ❌ In math, we're going to look at data and graphs and start a little thing called multiplication 👐 In reading, we're going to read narrative non-fiction stories about how everyone can contribute to a community 🚜 In social studies, we're going to look at the last type of community: rural - and maybe on to a VR field trip! I can't believe we've already finished the second week of school. Your third graders have been very busy. Over the first two weeks we've really been getting to know each other. Our class has officially become the Silly Sea Turtles! We played lots of "Get to Know You" games, one of which included eating candy outside! This week we really started to pick up the pace! We started math lessons and math homework. I am so proud of these third graders!! They jumped right into the math lessons and many were even willing to share their thinking on the smart board. I will chat with parents a little more about my homework policy on back to school night. My big take-aways are that students will never lose recess for missing or incorrect homework and that their math sheets shouldn't take more than 15 minutes. If it is a struggle, even after five minutes, stop your child and write a note. I will happily pull a small group or work one-on-one with your child. Homework is not meant to be stressful! We also got to do something pretty special and unique to New Boston this week - we got to plant our very own Christmas trees. This is a start to a wonderful tradition here at NBCS. Students will plant a tree in first grade and take care of it over the years. Then, in sixth grade, they will get to take that tree home for Christmas! The rain held out and the kids did a great job. Some students planted up to four trees! It will be so neat to see these trees (and students!) grow over the years. Next week will be the first five day week, but I know the students are ready for it! We've got such a great class, I am so looking forward to this year. It's going to be a great one. Have a great weekend! Upcoming Events: 📷 Monday, September 20th - Picture Day 🍎 Tuesday, September 21st - Back to School Night @ 6pm A Look Ahead: ⏰ In math, we're going to look at rounding and elapsed time 💖 In reading, we're going to read realistic fiction stories about how special traditions can be 🗺️ In social studies, we're going to look at different types of communities |
