It was so great to see so many faces yesterday! Even if you can only stop by for a few minutes on our Wednesday snack chat, come say hi! Next week the theme is going to be crazy hat day! Do you have a silly hat you could wear to snack chat? Start searching those closest, you've got a week.
Did you see the creative connection today? It's blind taste test time! Who is going to be the person who's blind folded? Who is going to raid the pantry to find some food to try to trick the tester? I can't wait to hear how it goes today! Good luck on guessing! See you today on our live chat for parentheses (if you are interested)! It's at 1pm, make sure you have a paper and pencil so we can practice the new skill together. Was anything else tricky this week? If so, reach out to Mrs. Mitchell and let's set up a time to chat. Is the social studies project feeling overwhelming? Let's talk about it together. Is reading the story and then writing about it causing frustration? Please, let me know. I won't know unless you reach out since I only see the final product. -Mrs. Mitchell Office Hours: 9:00 - 10:00 1:00 - 2:00 6:00 - 7:30

I loved reading everyone's ideas for chalk (or picture) drawings! If you were able to snap a picture, please send it to me. I have four so far and they came out amazing! Today, it's a dance challenge. You may be roped into a dance by your child. I do not apologize for this, haha! Enjoy 😂 Just wait until you see what we have planned for tomorrow's (optional) creative connection.
Math today is a completely new concept. It is a concept I think the students will understand, but it's so hard to do this whole teaching thing when it's so one way. I apologize, also, because the microphone was horrible when I went to my whiteboard camera. I will double check next time before I record the whole lesson. Today, you get to hear me teach parentheses as if I'm autotuned. Also, Anna tries to "help" so it should be quite fun... sorry! Today is our second Snack Chat meeting at 10am!! I can't wait to see who comes!! We're going to chat about their weekends, how their dancing went, how their chalk drawing went, what they think about their famous person, and I'm going to give a sneak peek for tomorrow's creative connection. And, they get to wear their PJs! Check Google Classroom to get a link to the Zoom meeting. That's it for today! Have a great day! -Mrs. Mitchell Office Hours: Same as always :-) 9:00 - 10:00 1:00 - 2:00 6:00 - 7:30 Your Famous American projects are coming out amazing! You have all week to create two important event slides. Make sure you stick to one event per slide. If you are having trouble finding information on your person after looking through FactCite and World Book, try some of these resources below: Don't forget, you can also look up websites on Kiddle.co to find more information. I was sidetracked quite a bit on these new reading websites with some fun looking How-To books. There's a ton on here and you can even search by grade level. I'm going to add this to the Just for Fun section of Helpful Links. Don't forget, today I'm offering some extra math practice on Zoom. Whether it was a little tricky or just right, you are welcome to join. The link will show up on Google Classroom tomorrow and the class starts right at 1 o'clock. Maybe see you there! Lastly, there is one new item for social studies today. On Tuesdays there will be some type of map skill assignment called GROW (geographical regions of the world). You'll have to look at a map and answer the questions. Check it out and use your skills to find the answers! Office Hours: 9:00 - 10:00 1:00 - 2:00 6:00 - 7:30 I hope you and your family had an amazing Easter together! It sure was different at our house, but we enjoyed the time together. This week starts step two of our famous American project! Your student will work on two new slides this week. The focus is picking the two most important (or interesting) events in their lives and keeping just to those events. If it's hard to pick, they can narrow it down to four events instead of just two.
I also added a short video about one way to add a picture to their Google slide project. However, another way is to copy and paste instead of saving and inserting an image. My screen recording program doesn't record the menus, so I showed the saving and inserting method because we've done that before in class. Adding pictures is optional but fun! We are also starting a new math lesson today. There will be two math lessons this week! The first is today with a review and practice tomorrow. Then on Wednesday we will introduce a new concept. If you find any of the math content is tricky for your student, please don't hesitate to reach out. Either Mrs. Erving, Mrs. Elliot, or myself are resources to help support families and students as we navigate this learning together. I may also reach out to you if there is something small I think a quick video chat would clear up. Have a great week! Office Hours: 9:00 - 10:00 1:00 - 2:00 6:00 - 7:30 Happy Easter Weekend, everyone! Just our normal Friday routine today. The winner for Mystery Doug was How Dangerous is it to Look at the Sun? with 9 votes, How Do They Make Doughnuts came in second with 3, and How Do They Make Metal came in third with 2. Not sure if you voted? A lot of friends didn't move their check mark to vote. Make sure you vote this week if you want to pick the next video! Our first Math Practice was so much fun! This was a super new concept and everyone did so well. I'm quite proud. We've got a balance next week with math. We've got a somewhat review lesson on Monday and a completely new concept on Wednesday. Get those thinking caps ready, we're going to need 'em! Without further ado, here is this week's video: Office Hours: 9:30 - 10:30 1:00 - 2:00 6:00 - 7:30 Have a great weekend! This week is absolutely flying by! It's never too late to send in a bring your pet to school day picture. In fact, if you have any fun pictures from this week (recycled creation, science experiment, reading under a tree) send them in. It's so nice to see everyone's smiling faces! Today we are going to try a live math practice just like we used to have at school. It'll be a little tricky since everyone will be on small screens. If you join late, just wait and listen and we'll do another practice problem. If it's still tricky, we can do a one on one chat or I can give some tips to your parents to help you. Remember that this learning is so much harder when we are apart and you are ROCKING every step of this. If it isn't perfect, at least you'll have seen the skill before I lose you to your future fourth grade teacher! So stay positive and be proud. You are doing AMAZING. Last week Mrs. Frarie and I tested out the quiz feature for a story. You'll see that again today, but I think it will go more smoothly. If not, feel free to reach out and I will try to problem solve and improve the best I can for next week. Don't forget to look back! There's one problem where you have to find a specific page number. Did you notice they put the page numbers at the bottom of the digital books? That should make it easier to find a page when you need it! Office Hours: 9:30 - 10:30 1:00 - 2:00 - Live Math Practice 6:00 - 7:30 We're half way through the week! Everyone is officially on Google Classroom, so make sure you check out the Creative Connections to see what everyone is saying. Today marks our second new learning for math! Make sure you do the practice problems in the video before you fill out your Google slides. I give everyone a day to check out the skill. If it still feels tricky, join me tomorrow on Zoom! There will be a link in Google Classrooms. I'm going to highlight one of the things we introduced this week: Podcasts! This week we did Two What's and a Wow! I included a link in Helpful Links to a different webpage that will hopefully play a little better with everyone's computers. They add podcasts all the time, so feel free to check them out! Everyone is doing such a great job with their famous American projects. Remember, there won't be a new job until next week. In the mean time, I'm going to add one more place you can read about your person. This is going to be helpful for next week's task. Do you remember when we studied Native Americans and we read about specific tribes on ebooks? Well the program that we use, MackinVIA just uploaded a ton of books to our library for us! Including... biographies! Read a little bit about your person over the next few days. Sign in using the information below the picture and click on the rainbow starburst in the bottom left section of the page. Then, just search for your person's name and click the green Open Now button when you find a book about them. There may not be a book about every person, but it's worth checking out! Also, you can read just for fun books here, too! Office Hours: 9:30 - 10:00 10:00 - 10:30 (ZOOM Snack Chat) 1:00 - 2:00 6:00 - 7:30 It's about time we had a just for fun website, huh? This website is filled with lots of fun science ideas. That goes perfectly with the optional creative connection today. The challenge is to complete a simple science experiment. Since this is just for fun, I'm not even making you collect data! However, I would love to know which one you picked and how it went. Share with your friends if you find a good one not on the website I'm sharing! Another website I want to recommend is XtraMath. In third grade, multiplication is huge in math. At school. I practice twice a with with each individual student during a math conference, we play multiplication games, and share multiplication strategies almost every day. I can't do that anymore from home. This is the next best thing because it is quick, simple, and very repetitive! They recommend doing it daily, it just takes a few minutes, and it is a great way to really solidify your facts. If you don't use this website because it isn't the right fit for you or your family, just tell me what you chose to do every Tuesday and Thursday. This is based on the honor system if you don't use XtraMath. However, if you do use XtraMath, I actually get to see your progress! I will be emailing parents with your passwords later today if you are interested. It was great to see all of your pets and stuffed animals! I hope you like your pick for your famous American. You have until Friday to change it! What a busy Monday you guys had! Office Hours: 9:30 - 10:30 1:00 - 2:00 6:00 - 7:30 Today is a school wide spirit day! Take a picture with your pet at home (or a stuffed animal like Anna and I did) and send me a picture! A new week, a new project! In third grade, we read biographies and learn about famous Americans. The skills I want your student to gain from this are citing resources, using more than one resource, summarizing instead of copying, and reading a biography. Those are some high level skills, so I allow the students to choose any American that made this world a better place. I am not picky, but I do push students to prove to me that the person they are picking is worth researching. Each week I will give them a task that they have a week to complete. I am going to keep the tasks small and manageable, typically between two slides of writing a week, while also keeping the other science and social studies days low-key with only small writing requirements. The school has some amazing resources for researching. I created a video to show the new ones (we've already used Brain Pop) and put it below: I put a link to all of these resources in the Helpful Links page as well as in their Science and Social Studies class.
This week starts Step One for your student. Their job will be to pick their famous American and create their title slide. They will also do their first bit of summarizing and write about their famous person as a child. Childhood can include most things before they were famous and while they were still in school. So if something interesting didn't happen until they were in high school, that's fine! You'll notice we went back to a review math today. We will have one more tomorrow and then go into the full swing of new math learning on Wednesday. They will follow a two day pattern. Lesson with a video from me and independent practice problems on day one. Day two will include a more hands on activity and an open math check-in on Zoom. I will send out a meeting invitation to all parents on Tuesdays and Thursday, unless you ask to be excluded from that invitation. Students can join the meeting to practice math more interactively or if they are having trouble. They do not have to join. Also, this is only for math work. I hope to have a Wednesday snack chat for our students' social needs and to say hi to missed friends. That's it for now! Have fun picking your famous American. No rush, you have the entire week! Office Hours: 9:30 - 10:30 1:00 - 2:00 6:00 - 7:30 Happy Friday!! But way more importantly... Happy Early Birthday, Cole!! It is time to celebrate another special fella that we are lucky enough to have in our virtual classroom! Today you'll have your normal Friday riddle, but there will also be a spot to tell Cole what you like about him, give him a pretend (but thoughtful!) present, and just say Happy Birthday. Also, if you draw a picture for him just like in our Birthday Books, I will send it to Cole's family so he can still enjoy your hard work! Happy, happy birthday, Cole! The other new thing we are trying out today is a mini quiz on the story from yesterday. This one is a practice to see how it works and possibly replace the written questions for one of the stories. Give it a try! Also, don't forget to "Turn In" your spelling practice for the week. Have an adult at home give you a spelling quiz for today's spelling work and write your score either in the Friday box OR in the comments. Next week I will make it more clear where to put your spelling grade. Feel free to also re-use my video for me to read you the words! So! My laundry helping, car designing, crazy book readers... are you ready for the weekly slide show?! There are some special bonus pieces at the end, so watch it all the way through even if your picture is first. I'm hoping next week to start some snack or lunch groups so you can chat with your friends. Look for more information next week. Also, most of these pictures are from the Creative Connections classroom. When I post questions so students can chat with each other it takes away the option to "add an attachment." So you'll have to email me the silly pictures from throughout the week if they were inspired by a Creative Connection. However, if you want to do your math work and take a picture instead of doing it on the computer, there is a spot to attach it right to that assignment right above the "Turn In" button. So many of you are already doing that and it is working out great!! Office Hours: 9:30 - 10:30 1:00 - 2:00 Have a great weekend! Love, Mrs. Mitchell and Mrs. Erving |
