We have officially wrapped up our states and capitals. We had four students complete at least 25 states and all 50 capitals! They worked so hard on their presentations. Thank you to all the families who allowed time to practice at home. Many students were able to look away from the board while presenting. All students spoke clearly so the audience could learn from them. On Monday, other classes will visit to see our hard work! I know some parents will be disappointed to know, but that is the last Glogster project of the year. Next term, we will be studying famous Americans, but we will not create anything on a Glogster. We will be moving on to opinion writing starting next week!
In math, we will be wrapping up our area and perimeter unit. This unit pushed a lot of students with new skills. Looking ahead, we will be jumping into fractions! These new skills aren't expected to be completely mastered after the first lesson. However, if homework is ever particularly tricky, please write me a note. If the homework comes back perfect, I have no idea there may have been tears involved. They are never punished for needing an extra checkin on skills. We are also continuing multiplication. The more practce they get at home, the more successful they will be in the classroom. If you need ideas, don't hesitate to reach out. Mrs. Mitchell

Your students have begun reading about one of the fifty states this week. They are so excited and bursting to share their information. On Monday, we will start our State Glogsters! There are still two weeks left for students to memorize the goal of at least 25 states. Over fifteen students have already beaten the task and are now studying their capitals! One student even learned all fifty states on the very first day!! There are games for the students to practice under the "States" section of this website. I hope you find them helpful!
Have a great weekend! Mrs. Mitchell As you may have heard, we have started to study states! We started with the seven continents and then focused on countries. We learned that maps have to be distorted when they are flatted from a globe onto a sheet of paper. We then trimmed our countries into smaller regions - such as states. Your student was given a map to practice at home. Today, I showed them some websites to practice on (with parental permission, of course).
Monday will be our first quiz and I expect each student to know at least five states. If they are able to reach the 25 state minimum on the first try, they only take the state test once and move on to capitals! If they reach 30 states, they earn a half-work pass. If they reach 40 states, they earn a no-work pass! If they reach 50 states, they earn TWO no-work passes. If they are able to get 50 states in the first two tries... I will give them THREE no-work passes. Go luck!! On Monday we will also begin our research on a specific state. Each child will choose one of the fifty states to research. We will be doing several in class mini-projects as the students learn about their state. We will also finish up AIMs Web testing. Those are quick tests that we do in the beginning, middle, and end of every school year. It helps us see the bigger picture and allows us to see progression or possible areas of weakness. If there are any areas of concern I will reach out so we can come up with a game plan to address those areas! Have a great weekend! Mrs. Mitchell |
