As Fall has started, so has multiplication! Third Graders are responsible for learning their multiplication tables up to 100. In order to asses their fluency with multiplication and division I do "conferences". Instead of giving every student a sheet of facts and a minute to write down the product, I have the students come up to me and look at a sheet of paper. If they tell my the product within three second, that fact is considered automatic. If they use a strategy, that's great! But we will keep working on them until they are automatic. The order of the facts for conferences goes 10s, 2s, 5s, 3s, 4s, 6s, 7s, 8s, 9s. You will be getting more information on how this whole process works next week. Look for the first conference sheet to go home on Thursday!
We are wrapping up our communities unit in social studies. The students will be writing letters to different types of communities across the United States (all fifty states!). We usually get only ten or so letters back, but it is so exciting when we do! We look up their school on Google Earth and discuss what kind of community wrote back to us. I can't believe it's already almost October. Our first month has flown by! A Look Ahead: Monday - Picture day at 11:45am Thursday - School drill
