We are finally done with March! What a month that was... oiy! Today starts the first new learning for math. It was meant to be the topic for math class on the first Monday we were apart from each other. Each week we will pick the most important themes and skills for your students and do our best to support them and you. Today we will work on subtraction with borrowing. I'm new to this, so it's a bit choppy. Fun fact, did you know you can't have a YouTube video longer than 15 minutes if you are a new account? Neither did I. Ugh. But, enjoy this under 15 minute lesson and practice found on Google Classroom! Also, fair warning, Wonders is having some technical issues that may pop up today. When I shared the vocabulary words to Google Classroom it has the kids sign into Wonders (makes sense) but then doesn't direct them to the right page. It may just show their "virtual textbooks" or even an error. If that happens, I added their vocabulary cards to their old "To Do" list. This is the page we are looking for so they can read the definitions: I had some success with logging in when it asked, exiting out of that tab, then clicking the link again. It loaded that way most of the time. But not always. So, worse case scenario, please just click on the Wonders textbook and go to the old To Do list to read your words. (Username: 29lastnamefirstinitial / password: Bobcat123) The results are in! Your kids definitely prefer to play outside! So feel free to kick them out for some extra recess. Maybe make them rake a bit? Maybe I'll have them run around trees for you again? Actually, parents, I think you will like the Creative Connection for tomorrow. I'm sure you could use a helping hand with this particular task around the house. While they were inside today, they did learn a lot about some famous woman. Ruby Bridges was the most popular choice. She was a pretty special young lady. Amelia Earhart was another fan favorite! Today we will switch gears and head back to science. Instead of observing, we are going to take it a step further and share thing you might be wondering about the animals you are watching. Don't forget to check your work that's been passed back to you. The check mark means check to see what the teacher said. You can go to the To Do list and click Done like I show you yesterday. Or, you can click on each class like below. A few friends do have fixes. You will know if you don't have fixes if you see a giant stamp on your work. See the examples below: Office Hours:

Now that we've dipped our toes into Google Classroom, we're going to add a little bit more today. We will keep going with Math and Creative Connections. Both of those have another tip video that you are welcome to watch. We are also adding Reading and Writing today (did you miss those weekend journals?) and Science and Social Studies. You'll have to "Join" these new classes before you can complete your work. Speaking of completed work! Now that you are PROS at this remote learning business, let's talk about correcting work, grades, and feedback. The video below will show you where to look for your teacher feedback and grades. If I am specifically grading you on something, I will let you know in the directions just like I do in class. Check out the video to see where to look: There is a new Creative Connection today that also has a video explaining how you can reply to your classmates answers. There are no second chances with this tool. You are expected to be kind and school appropriate. If you aren't sure if it would be okay, don't post it. Have fun!
Online Help Hours: 9:30 - 10:30 1:00 - 2:00 6:00 - 7:30 We hope you had a fabulous weekend! Today starts the first day on Google Classroom. Below, I made a video to show you what it would look like before you login to Google in case you were curious. However, Google does a great job of walking you through the setup process. I also showed you a few tips to hopefully make that transition smooth. Shout out to Olivia and Joe for letting me borrow their accounts, and Aubrey and Aiden for testing the logins for me! Thank you!! Username: 29(lastname)firstinitial Password: (firstinitial)lastinitial-8lunchnumber (just like logging into the computers at school) Example: 29mitchellk km-81234 All the descriptions, links, and materials will be in Google Classroom, so I won't be posting an assignment summary here anymore. I will be including my office hours to let you know when I will be on the computer and available to help if needed. I will also give you up to date news and even hints on what might be coming for future lessons.
For example, if you don't read carefully in today's Creative Connection, you might miss this week's photo challenge! I'm going to put together another Friday show and share video at the end of the week with all the crazy places you were reading. I'll include up to three pictures of each student that wants to join in. That means that you can include one crazy reading picture and two extra photos of your choice for our slideshow. I can't wait to see what you decided to share with everyone. Oh, also... I did create a Google Classroom login link on the Helpful Links page. It's right at the top! Speaking of the Helpful Links page, don't forget to check out the new assignments from your specials teachers. Physical education, music, and art will be updating their Week 3 page today! Have fun with Google Classroom :) Office Hours: 9:00 - 11:00 6:00 - 7:30 We made it through another week! It seems like we will be at this for a little while... We are absolutely rockin' it! Even though we'll be a part for a little while longer, we can still keep in touch. If you want to sign-up for a teacher phone call check in, have your parents pick a day and time that works! Click here to see what's available. You could hear from me OR Mrs. Erving! Speaking of Mrs. Erving... she has a riddle for you :) But wait, there's more!! You guys have been so busy this week. Here's a quick look into what your fellow classmates have been doing! Next week is going to have some changes with how we do assignments. I promise, I will walk you through step by step! In fact, on Monday you are only going to have two assignments instead of four! YaY! We are going to practice two new ways to submit work. The plus side: you don't have to print anything, you can type it right there, nice and easy, and it sends it right back to me! The tricky side, it's new... and new can be uncomfortable at first. But fear not! I am here for you and will have a video you can watch that will take you through it step by step. Have a great weekend and I'll chat with some of you on Monday! Office Hours: 9:30 - 10:30 6:00 - 7:30 ELA What book are you reading? We’d love to hear from you! Here are some ways you can do this: What is your favorite part? Who is your favorite character? Do you have any predictions? - Draw a picture (have mom or dad send an email or click "Add a Resource" above the "Note to Teacher" box) - Record your voice or write about it Math It’s Friday! You worked so hard this week. Your job today is to play one of the following math games. Remember, you can find lots of math games on the EveryDay Math side of ConnectEd at any time. Math Game Choices: - Baseball Multiplication - Equivalent Fractions - Name that Number Science There's another Mystery Doug video this week! Check it out and tell me what you learned on Wonders. Creative Connection Riddle time! Can you guess the riddle Mrs. Erving gave you? This is a tough one! I am so impressed with the chefs in this class! Everyone was cooking up a storm yesterday. Some friends make breakfast with sausage and hash browns. Others ate lots of yummy fruits and veggies for snacks, like steaming green beans or eating apples and oranges. I was blown away that some friends even made soup! I've got you movin' and grovin' again today. hat leads me to my next enrichment shout out! Go Noodle! We do this all the time in class but you can also do Go Noodle at home. In fact, I know some of you already do. That Creative Connection today is to do an exercise or a dance. I'm going to introduce Anna to the Zumba one, he just always makes me smile. If you don't want to use Go Noodle, find a fun video to dance to on YouTube or pick an exercise and see how many you can do! I miss hearing everyone's voices! Parents, be on the lookout for a sign-up to have a weekly check-in with your teacher. If you think your student would benefit for chatting, I would love to set aside a time at least once a week to do that. I know not every student might want this, which is why I'm going to set up a sign-up. I am hoping to have a dedicated day every week for the students that want to check-in. We can talk about what they did over the weekend, the book their reading, or I can walk them through a tricky assignment. However, I am always available if they need to be walked through something. If you email me with a number that works, know that I am willing to call and help! So, be on the lookout for that email today if it is something your family is interested in getting started :) Office Hours: 9:30 - 10:30 6:00 - 7:30 ELA Read the story or listen to the story: The Winningest Woman of the Iditarod Dog Sled Race. Answer this question in the “Note to Teacher” box: What are 3 facts that you can find in the poem. Math Please complete the attached problem in your Wonders To-Do area. If you can’t print it, just copy the problems onto a piece of paper. Make sure to show your work and explain your thinking to an adult at home. Science / Social Studies Check out this week’s Scholastic News. Click on the link. This will take you to the classroom login page. Our classroom password is nbpride. Read the articles and watch the videos. For Spy in Disguise: write down 3 examples of Sarah Emma Edmonds acting bravely. Write them in the “Note to Teacher” box. Creative Connections Find a kid’s exercise video online like GoNoodle (ask first!) Do it! See if your family wants to join in. What exercises did you do? That collaborate button was so neat! We also have an early April birthday, so be on the lookout for another birthday shout out page! I have another idea of how to use the collaborate feature next week. As long as you stay on topic you'll be able to comment back and forth with each other! Did you notice you could comment on other people's birthday ideas? Stay tuned next week to see what we use the Collaborate spot for next! If you started drawing a birthday picture for Will and didn't send it yet, please send it today. I hope to send all the birthday pictures together tonight! We've been keeping you busy with your required assignments! However, if you are ever looking for other things to do, I am going to start adding suggestions for enrichment, or just plain for fun, to the "Helpful Links" page on my website. The most important links are right at the top of the Helpful Links page, your special teacher's websites! Don't forget to check in with them to let them know how you did with their weekly assignment. However, there are lots of other things you have access to because you are a bobcat! The first one I'm going to remind you about is Reading Counts! You can take quizzes from home about the books you are reading. The quizzes are quick and are a great way to keep your reading muscles strong. The log in reminder will always be right above the enrichment ideas on the Helpful Links page for when this page disappears. But for now, here is a quick hint: Username: Firstname Lastname Password: @NewBoston1 Good luck! If you take a quiz, I'd love to hear about it. You can always have your parents email me. However, I'm looking into a way to check in with everyone a little more frequently. Stay tuned for more information on that! Shout out to our jumping jack champions (which was all of you who actually did the challenge)! The highest number was 200 jumping jacks. The friends who attempted at least got 30 jumping jacks. Several people came close to or slightly over 100. Mrs. Erving and I are extremely impressed! And your welcome Moms and Dads for those Terrific Turtles that cleaned their rooms. I was nervous they would have found an old PB & J sandwich or something gross, but you mostly just found lost treasures like stuffed animals and necklaces. What will I have you do today... Office Hours: 9:30 - 10:30 6:00 - 7:30 ELA Read or listen to the poems Ginger’s Fingers, The Giant, and Captain’s Log in Wonders. Answer the following Question: Tell about a time a person inspired you. Remember to write in the blue box. Pay attention to spelling and punctuation. Be clear about who the person is and what they do that inspires you. Math You know the drill, go check out the practice problems. This time the skill we are practicing is fractions! The second part of the word problem should be considered a challenge problem. Give it a shot in the Note to Teacher box and I'll let you know how you did! Make sure to show your work and explain your thinking to an adult at home. Science / Social Studies Time to use your observation skills. Check out this Panda Cam. Observe for however long you’d like. Look closely and write in the “Note to Teacher” box two scientific observations. Creative Connections If you are allowed, make your own lunch today. Include at least one healthy food. What did you make? Happy Birthday, Will!! Today is a very special day. It is a birthday for one of our very own!! Even though we can't be together to celebrate Will's birthday, we are going to do our best to let him know we are thinking of him. I've opened up a super top secret part of your Wonders portal (okay, not super secret... it's always been there). We are going to send Will birthday messages and fill out the best part of the birthday book... the gifts! If you had a birthday book page in front of you and could give Will ANYTHING what would you give him? Really think about it and then head over to the spot in the picture below. You'll be able to see everyone's ideas. In order to keep it safe, I have to approve your post before it will show up. So be patient, I will check in throughout the day so you can see everyone's celebrations for Will. :) But, there's another major part of a birthday book. The pictures! If you'd like to draw a picture for Will and send me a picture, I will make sure Will gets it. Let's all come together to celebrate a pretty awesome fella!
Office Hours: 9:30 - 11:00 6:00 - 7:30 ELA Look at each of the vocabulary cards, just like we do in class. Play the game to review your vocabulary words. Expectations: Write FOUR third grade sentences using your vocabulary words in the "Note to Teacher" box. Can't wait to see what you come up with! Can you make it into a story?? It can even be silly as long as you use the words correctly. If you need to add suffixes, that's totally fine, too! Math Please complete the attached problems. If you can’t print it, just copy the problems onto a piece of paper. Make sure to show your work and explain your thinking to an adult at home. Today's tip: There are twelve in a dozen. Could you figure out 10x__ and 2x___ and then add the products together? Science / Social Studies In Social Studies, we study famous American’s who made our country a better place to live. I’m sure you’ve all heard of George Washington. Today, your job is to read some surprising facts about our first president. Click here to read the article. When you’re all done reading, write the most surprising thing you learned in the “Note to Teacher” box found on your Wonder's To-Do list. Creative Connections Turn on some cool music and clean your room. Don’t forget to clean under your bed! Write down one thing you found that you forgot you had on your Wonder's To-Do list. Hello Terrific Turtles (and family)! Mrs. Erving and I hope you had an amazing weekend. We've got a lot planned for you this week. We will slowly be adding to your learning. This week you will have lots of science activities and challenges. You'll also have some social studies activities mixed into your week. Mrs. Erving helped me test out our first Science activity. But, mother nature pulled a fast one on me and apparently it's supposed to snow today! If you didn't get out fast enough to beat the snow and complete a few of these, that's okay! I'll extend the deadline. If you send a picture in, you'll be include in our Friday show and share. Each week we'll have a challenge or prompt that you can take a picture of. If your parents are comfortable emailing me a picture, you will be included on our Friday post. The integrated arts team has added new activities for week 2 of remote learning. I have updated those links on the Helpful Links page to include their entire site, not just the weekly activities. Something new this week: you can check in and mark yourself complete. Physical Education, Gym, and Music have an "attendance" area where you can let your specials teacher know that you've completed their assignment.
Over the week I will also highlight some of the subscriptions your student has access to through the school. They are all optional, but great learning tools or opportunities for enrichment if you have down time. As I highlight them, I will create an easy to find link on the Helpful Links page. Too curious to wait? Just check out the library links that can already found on that page. -Mrs. Mitchell Office Hours: 9-10:30 6-7:30 Assignments: ELA Weekend Writing Prompt You hear Mrs. Erving, tell us about your weekend! Please type in the blue "Note to Teacher" box found on the Wonder's To-Do list. This will go right to me. I can't wait to hear from you! Expectations: ( ) 5 sentences or more ( ) capitals and punctuation ( ) proper spelling Math Head on over the the Wonder's To-Do list to see today's practice problems. Make sure to show your work and explain your thinking to an adult at home. Today our focus is addition and elapsed time. Perhaps an open number line will be your strategy today. Science / Social Studies Scavenger Hunt! Get outside and see how many of the tasks you can complete from the attached scavenger hunt. Take a picture of your favorite activity if you’d like. We’ll share some pictures on Friday if you send them to your teacher. Creative Connection - OPTIONAL Every hour on the hour, do 10 jumping jacks! Write down the total number of jumping jacks you did today! Who will get the highest amount? Happy Friday! We made it through our first week of distance learning. Anna and I have a Friday Riddle for you. Can you solve it? If you think you know the answer, head on over to ConnectEd to give it a guess. :) Both you and your families continue to amaze me. We got through this together. This is not easy and you are all rockin' it! Fridays will be a little more relaxed. I hope you enjoy! One last resource to leave you with. I am able to comment on what you send in through ConnectEd, but you're not able to comment back. If your student ever wants to actually chat with me like we do in the morning, we can become pen pals! Every student has a Google account. I didn't get to show the kids how to login, but it follows the same pattern that most of their other logins do. If they'd like, they can make a Google Doc and share it with me (Kristen Mitchell). Or, I can create one for them if you email me. This way we can write back and forth like penpals. No pressure, just wanted to offer the choice! Google Drive Link Username: [email protected] example: [email protected] (this is their login for the computer, so a few friends actually have their middle initial as well) Password: first initial last initial-lunch number example: km-81234 (same as the computer as well) Have an amazing weekend, everyone! Office Hours: 9:00 - 11:00 3:30 - 5:00 ELA What book are you reading? We’d love to hear from you! Here are some ways you can do this: Draw a picture (have mom or dad send an email) Record your voice or type in the box to tell me about your favorite character or your favorite part of the story so far Math It’s Friday! You worked so hard this week. Your job today is to play one of the following math games. Remember, you can find lots of math games on the EveryDay Math side of ConnectEd at any time. Math Game Choices: - Baseball Multiplication - Equivalent Fractions - Name that Number Science OPTIONAL - Just like at school, you can watch Mystery Doug at home. Follow this link here to learn about the science of rainbows for Saint Patrick’s Day! Before you can view the video, you do need to have Mom or Dad sign up with an email. However, it is completely free! The only email you will get is a weekly reminder to check out their fun science videos. If your family would rather keep their email private, try this Youtube video on rainbows instead. After you watch one of the videos, make sure to tell us your favorite fact in the “Note to Teacher” box on Wonders. Hello!
I was so impressed with the detail in your answers for the story yesterday. You can up with so many other ways to fly: hot air balloons, flying squirrel suits, hang gliders, parachutes, and more! Way to go. Today, your story is a tad longer. Currently, if you try to read it on mobile, it won't work and will give you an error. It does work on laptops, though! If you need to use a mobile, reach out to me and I will problem solve with you. Math is jumping to subtraction practice today! Remember, even though it is math, your assignment (and all future assignments as we add science, social studies, and more) will be found on the to-do list on the Wonders side of ConnectEd. Unfortunately, EverdayMath does not let me assign work like Wonders does. But, there is tons to explore on the EverydayMath side of ConnectEd! You will see assignments sending you over there to visit for games. But there are also virtual decks of cards, dice, math manipulatives, clocks, unit cubes, and more! Want some tips on how to get more out of that EverdayMath side? Feel free to reach out via email. Or curious about what lesson we would have been doing together, go explore and click on today's lesson! I love hearing from the students and Mrs. Erving and I miss them terribly. Right now, I can respond to them but they can't respond back to my comment. I am working on a school approved way students could chat with me or Mrs. Erving if they wanted to. This could be for help, or to tell me something fun they are working on just like during snack or recess. Stay tuned as I try to problem solve that! As always, reach out if you need anything. I have office hours to let you know when I'm specifically on my laptop responding to students and can get back immediately. But honestly, my email goes straight to my phone so I can almost always get back to you right away. Thank you for all you are doing at home. I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy. Office Hours: 9:30 - 11:00 6:00 - 7:30 ELA: Read or listen to Hot Air Balloons on the Wonders side of ConnectEd. Answer the following question in the Note to Teacher box: What causes a balloon to rise in the air? Reread page 351 to find the answer. Remember to use a complete sentence and text evidence! Math Please complete the attached problems found on the Wonder's To-Do list. Make sure to show your work and explain your thinking to an adult at home. In the “Note to Teacher” box below, tell us how you did! |
